STUDENT-BUILT BIRDHOUSES FOR FOUR BRIDGES
ODOT Bridge Repair and Replacement Project
The Oregon Department of Transportation initiated a project to repair one bridge and replace three bridges along Highway 126 in Lane County between Eugene and Mapleton.
LCA, working on behalf of T.Y. Lin International and Slayden Construction, led a comprehensive public involvement effort that engaged diverse stakeholders and helped minimize impacts on businesses, commuters, and residents. To enhance public awareness of this project, LCA engaged elementary and middle school students in learning about the design, construction and environmental impacts of this project and helped them build birdhouses that they presented to the Mayor of Veneta at a project open house. This approach significantly boosted open house attendance and resulted in excellent media coverage and public expressions of appreciation of ODOT by local elected.
- Public Involvement
- Communication Strategy
- School Outreach
- Materials Development
- Meeting Facilitation
I would have to rate the open house as one of the best I have attended. As we move ahead with construction, it is nice to know we have “friends” in the community.
