OUR SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

At LCA, we are committed to environmental, economic and social responsibility. We make decisions that cut costs, reduce demand on shared natural resources and improve the quality of life for the communities we serve. LCA has earned Gold-level certification in the City of Portland’s Sustainability at Work program.

We minimize consumption of resources in the workplace through individual efforts and company practices in the following areas (click on the image for more details).

Water + Energy

Water and Energy Use

LCA works with our building manager to conserve water and energy, through the following practices:

+ LCA has decreased our energy use by nearly 50% by de-lamping and switching to more efficient lighting
+ LCA’s office has plenty of natural light, and lights are only used when necessary
+ Tap water is used for drinking rather than bottled water or water in 5 gallon jugs
+ The building manager uses water efficiently when watering landscaping
+ Employees use reusable water bottles at the office

Transportation

Transportation

LCA provides online information to visitors to facilitate use of active and sustainable transportation to our office. See our contact page for more details.

Employees are encouraged to use sustainable modes of transportation when commuting to work including bicycling, walking, public transportation, and carpooling. Bike parking, a pump, repair kit, spare lights, and a spare lock are provided. Employee means of transportation to work are tracked to encourage alternatives to driving.

Company meetings outside of the office take place at coffee shops and other establishments that maintain sustainable practices, and videoconferencing is frequently used.

Decision-Making

Decision-Making

At LCA, we are committed to projects that enhance our communities for the better. We think about the Triple Bottom Line (economy, equity, environment) when determining if a potential project is in line with our company’s mission and vision. We’re on the lookout for clients and new staff members who share our values. Our sustainability team meets monthly to monitor our progress toward sustainability and to identify new workplace practices or projects to advance our sustainability goals.

Waste

Waste Minimization

LCA provides clearly-labeled recycling containers throughout the office. In addition to curbside recycling, we collect non-curbside recycling including rigid plastics, plastic bags, and electronics. These are taken to recycling facilities and scrap paper is reused and turned into mini notebooks. Staff collects food waste and other compostables to bring home for composting. We encourage a culture of sustainability in which everyone understands how their individual choices can make a difference in the company’s overall environmental impact. We also choose to walk to the front of our office, instead of using the elevator.

Purchasing

Purchasing

LCA reduces the need for purchases, to lessen our impact. When new things are needed, we prioritize purchases that are:

+ Secondhand
+ Made from recycled or sustainably harvested materials
+ Reusable, recyclable or compostable
+ Locally made
+ Sold by suppliers that prioritize sustainability
+ Certified (Energy Star, Fair Trade, FSC, etc.)
